Criteria E - Evaluation

A main part of this unit was getting to know who you are, what you’re good at, and what you maybe want to do with the rest of your life. We took personality tests. Based on those tests, there were websites we could go to and see which careers might suit us best. This part was fun. I liked taking the tests and seeing what I would be good at. The personality type test was accurate, but the careers that went with it did not interest me at all. The tests were to help us get an idea for our career plan and our university resume.

During this project I had to create two things. First I had to make a career plan. For this I had to choose a possible future career. A career plan shows your qualifications, your past education and the knowledge and skills you need to have for the certain career. I chose Interior Designing as my career. I had to do research on what skills were need, what education was needed and what knowledge was needed to become and Interior Designer. This was interesting for me because an Interior Designer is something I would choose to do in my future.

After I completed my career plan, I began working on a university resume/entrance video. Everyone had to research universities/colleges and what their requirements were. In the video I was supposed to speak about my qualifications, educational background, extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, and why the college/university should choose me. I learned quite a bit doing this assignment. I’ve had bad experiences with editing movies though. The final product had to be a video. I decided to film the whole thing in one big chunk. That way I wouldn’t have to edit it. This worked out quite well. I had a few people watch my video. That was the worst part of the project. They said that the content was good, but I was too serious and stiff. When I make a college entrance video again, I’ll make it more interesting/fun. Maybe I’ll just use my voice instead of filming myself, because I am not really comfortable with it.

This unit has been interesting. I haven’t thought about college and my future. I had no idea what I really wanted to do and what it would take. I’ve learned about myself and what I need to do and how I’m going to do it. I still need to work on my university resume, and I have to decide what I want to do as a career. There are so many careers to choose from! I still have time though. I enjoyed doing the personality type quizzes and what careers would theoretically suit me. I learned things in this unit that really are practical for the future.

Criteria A – Investigate

For Criteria A we had to research our personality types, possible careers, one career that we would choose for the career plan, colleges/universities, and other stuff that has to do with careers and college. The first part of the unit was interesting, I think I had enough research to understand what I like to do and write a career plan. For the university resume I think I could have researched more colleges that I would be interested in and gone to. I also should have researched more on what colleges require. This may have made filming the video even easier. I completed the Investigation successfully.

Criteria B – Plan

For Criteria B, we had to finalize our decision on which career we wanted to use for our career plan. Then we had to research a little on the career we had chosen and find out what we needed to include for the career plan. I think I did well on this part of the Design Cycle. All I had to do was a rough draft of the career plan I was going to create in Criteria D. Criteria B was very brief.

We did not do Criteria C for this unit.

Criteria D – Create

In this unit everyone was supposed to create two things. Everyone had to create a career plan and a university entrance video. The career plan part was easy. I probably could have put more effort into researching what I needed to know, have to be an interior designer. Once you had all the necessary information though, it was very simple to create a career plan following the format Mrs. Wilson gave us.

Making the entrance video was little more difficult. First I had to research what to include in a college entrance video. The information collected would then go into my video. For the USA you need to have taken the SAT. I also “had” an IB Diploma and other things like that. I spoke about what I was involved in too. I was supposed to choose a college that I wanted to go to. I really have no idea where I want to go, or even what country. So for my video I just decided to go to Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. I did not like the video part of this unit. So I kind of put it off. Then when I wanted to film, I was planning on using a web cam, the sounds was really bad. I tried a few computers till I found one that could record visual and audio well. As I mentioned before I do not know how to edit videos, so I chose to do my video all in one piece. This was much simpler I think than editing. My video could have been more fun and entertaining, not so serious.

I think it is necessary to learn about different careers and how to achieve your goals. It impacts your families your schools, your future. By making good choices you can have a good future. You family will be proud and you will be able to support them. If you choose a career you enjoy, you will enjoy life more. For yourself, you want to do the best you can do, and what you enjoy doing. It’s important that you can get into the college you want to go to. If everyone body could do the job they wanted to, I think it would improve a lot of things. This unit was definitely helped me get a little more comfortable with the future and what I’m going to do. I know now what I have to achieve.

Criteria A - Investigation

Future career goal: Interior Designer

Qualifications: IB Diploma, good SAT scores, good GPA, Bi-lingual, High-School Diploma

If a college doesn’t require an IB Diploma, I probably wouldn’t go to a college. I would want to go to a college that requires you to have an IB Diploma, SAT scores, GPA and to be bi-lingual. I want a college to have these qualifications because it is more likely to me a good college and I’ll enjoy.

Educational background:
International School of Latvia (Grades Pre-School-7)
& International School of Ulaanbaatar (Grades 8-12)

I have lived in Latvia and Mongolia. In both countries I have studied in IB schools. Throughout my education I have received good grades.

Extra-curricular activities: ISU Girls Soccer Team (2 years), ISU Girls Volleyball Team (1 year), ISU Orchestra (1 year), ASAs – Photography Club
ISL Girls Soccer Team (1 year), ISL Swim Team (1 year)
Outside of school – Study the flute for 4 years

I have been part of the soccer team and volleyball team in the International School of Ulaanbaatar. In Latvia I was also part of the girl’s soccer team for one year. I enjoy all of the extra-curricular activities, which is why I participate in them. I have been to two CEESA events and three ACAMIS events.

Volunteer: Trash pick-ups, orphanage visits, performed at church for elders.

I have not done much volunteer work though I have had plenty of opportunities. I have completed all the required C&S hours for each year. It is one of my personal goals to do more volunteer work.

What makes me special: I am a third culture kid. I have travelled a lot and experienced quite a bit. I can speak English and German fluently and a bit of French and Chinese. I've lived in Europe (Latvia) and Asia (Mongolia).I was born in India and have never lived in the USA, where my mother is from, or Germany, where my dad is from. I enjoy learning and seeing new things.

Criteria B - Design

Interior Designing, Photography, Psychology

I want to be an interior designer or work in the Arts and Design section. Photography is also one of my future career choices. If interior designing doesn’t work out, I’ll be a photographer. Psychology also interests me. Both interior designing and photography need artistic skills. Psychology is just something I have been interested in, but haven’t thought about much.

I want to go to a college somewhere interesting. I have never lived in Germany or the USA. I have grown up in different countries. I’m a third-culture kid, so I need to go to a college with other people like me. People who have grown up in different countries. It would be a more fun experience for me. I don’t know what country I want to go to for college, but the college needs to be international.

Criteria A - Investigation

Everything you do affects your future. The grades I get in school will affect what college I get into. My grades also show what I enjoy or am good at. I think based on my grades I will decide what I want to study and what I’ll do with my life. I think school is a good place to find out what you enjoy doing and what you want to do. You still get to learn a lot of different things. Then when it’s time to go to college you may have an idea of what you want to study. Choosing a career is a big decision. I definitely do not want be stuck in a career that I do not enjoy.
I haven’t done any volunteer work this year. If you’re interested in social work or think you might be volunteering is a good place to start. You can learn about yourself and who you want to help.
I would want to continue doing what I like to do for fun, but get paid for it. I think leisure experiences show what kind of person you are. What you like to do and what you don’t like to do. I enjoy reading, taking pictures, and sports. The experiences you have while having fun can help you decide what you want to do.
School activities: Girls Soccer team
Volleyball team
School Play (onstage)
Orchestra
After School Activities
Based on the career tests we took, I would be a good business person, or computer programmer. None of the careers suggested to me were anything I would enjoy doing. I want to an interior designer or photographer. I have also thought of becoming a psychologist. Recently I have thought of being a librarian. I know it sounds really boring but I do enjoy reading and I love libraries. Psychology has always interested me. I want to be able to help somebody by talking to them. I have always thought that talking solves problems. I like being creative. I like art. Photography really interests me. I think I would enjoy doing that as a career.
I enjoy sports, but I am not good enough to play a sport professionally. It has never interested me in that way either. Most of the things that I do are just for fun. I have never wanted to do them as a career. I think that I get bored or fed up with things easily. I need to find a career that will keep me interested and entertained. I do not like challenging things because I’m too lazy. I can’t be bothered to put effort into something too challenging. I want to do something that requires art because I enjoy it.

Possible Careers

Possible Career Paths for the ISTJ:

* Business Executives, Administrators and Managers
* Accountants and Financial Officers
* Police and Detectives
* Judges
* Lawyers
* Medical Doctors / Dentists
* Computer Programmers, Systems Analysts, and Computer Specialists
* Military Leaders

The traits listed for the careers applied to me, but I do not like any of the careers listed. I am not interested in Business or into Law. I am more artistic and I want to be a photographer or interior designer. I find the careers listed quite boring.

Quiet, serious, earn success by thoroughness and dependability. Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic, and responsible. Decide logically what should be done and work toward it steadily, regardless of distractions. Take pleasure in making everything orderly and organized – their work, their home, their life. Value traditions and loyalty.

What I like to do...

I enjoy reading fiction. I like fiction written in a way that could be true. Stories that are not true, but have a sense of reality really get me hooked. I play the flute, and even though I do not enjoy practicing, I want to continue playing the flute. I also enjoy art, though I never feel like I have good ideas. I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a kid. I really like decorating, organizing and re-modeling rooms and houses. It’s a lot fun to change something and make it better. I enjoy sports in general. I like to swim, play soccer, play volleyball and badminton isn’t so bad. I don’t like basketball. Running around and playing games is fun. In school I enjoy English, Art, P.E. and Chinese. Even though Chinese is difficult I enjoy learning languages. I like being able to speak different languages. I do not enjoy math, but science is okay. I have also learned that taking part in the school play can be a fun and entertaining experience. Traveling can be stressful, but once I get to a new place it's a lot of fun learning about it.

In the past four years I have enjoyed...

1. Soccer
2. Swimming
3. Flute
4. Art
5. Reading
6. Volleyball
7. School - Mostly English, Art,
8. Traveling
9. Interior Designing
10. Languages

Most of the activities I listed above are connected to art or sports. I enjoy just zoning out and drawing something or playing something. It's very calming to me. I can think about things or I can completely focus on the picture I was drawing or the song I was playing. I enjoy sports activities because it's fun! If I'm not good at a sport, like basketball, it's not fun. I like team sports because you're with a whole bunch of people, running around and having fun. Swimming is just awesome... I can't explain why I like it.
The activities don't challenge me, I think that's what I like about them. There just things that keep me entertained. If they do get challenging I don't enjoy them as much. Except with sports. In tournaments I like having a team with me. It's more fun that way.
I think that some of the things I like to do, I could be better at doing. I have the ability to do things, but I think I should put more effort and commitment into the activities I do. I need to discipline myself to try my hardest when I do the activities. Persistence. I need to be persistent to develop in my activities.

Evalutaion: Shiny Shakespeare Show

This project was a major fail. It took everyone a long time to get on track and organized. We spent forever waiting for our scripts to be returned. Even once we had everything we weren’t ready to start filming. It was just a whole lot of confusion and nothing got done. At first, the class seemed excited and really into it, but it just went downhill from that. We spent a lot of time just sitting around, wasting time basically. English B students didn’t have anything to do, and English A students were not getting much done either. This project was not successful. We didn’t film, edit and it was completely unorganized. We didn’t even finish the project. I’m only writing an Evaluation because something needs to be done to wrap up this project.
I was supposed to be following the design cycle for this unit, but like the project in general, it didn’t really work out. I did the Investigation. I researched quite a bit about filming, editing, props and stuff like that. I had all my sources too. The scripts were being graded so the whole class waited for them to be returned. This was a waste of time. Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Thompson both had different ideas of how this unit would work out, so the class was just confused.
Criteria B, Design, seems to have been lost. I didn’t do anything for Criteria B because I needed my script. So I waited, and then went to ACAMIS. I think for Criteria B, the class did it together. Most people voted on the scripts. The script with the most votes was Tsolmon’s, so we were going to film hers. There was a lot of mind changing and no one seemed to be making any real decisions that could keep us going.
Usually I always have to do Criteria C, Plan, but this time I didn’t. I do not know if the class did while I was in ACAMIS, but I don’t think so. This may have been why this project ended up so bad. There was no planning put into it. One good thing about this project is that it has shown me that planning is important.
Criteria D is Create. We spent one class trying to get something done. We filmed, but no one knew their lines and it was just pointless. That class was probably where everyone got sick of this unit. We looked at the videos that Haram had filmed and they were no good. So we didn’t create anything. I don’t think we gave up. We recognized a lost cause when we saw it. We did try to make it work, but probably not hard enough. There was just a whole lot of confusion and ideas were changing and we couldn’t stick with anything. So now I am evaluating this project….
Improvements for this unit could take a long time. First I think that every single person taking part should have all been on the same track and known what we were getting in to. Second, we needed our script from the beginning! I really think that would have helped. Then it would have been easier to get started and get into the flow of this project. We should have been more serious about it. I think if we had had costumes and real settings and props we would have been more enthusiastic about it. I didn’t really enjoy what we did in this project, though I think it could have been good. Mrs. Wilson did say though that it hasn’t been successful with any grade, so maybe this unit is ju

April 26th...

So far the class has chosen a final script that will be turned into a video. Tsolmon's script had the most votes. The script includes Hero, Beatrice, Claudio, Benedick, Don Pedro, Ursula, Margaret and Borachio.

One group of students is working on editing, costumes, setting and props. The other group is the actors and they are working on memorizing the script and everything else actors do.

It's all messed up at the moment. We are lacking in the enthusiasm in creating the final product. First we were going to combine two scripts, but that would have been a lot of work. So then, the class decided to just take Tsolmon's script, since her's had the most votes. Now we're trying to get everything together.

Next Wednesday we want to start filming. Some of it will be practice. I have been given then role of the host. Either lines have to be memorized or we'll have cards and we can do different parts of the script at different times.

So far...

Much Ado about Nothing: Entertainment Special

The host enters. Audience applauds and cheers.

Host: How ya’ll doing tonight?! Audience screams replies such as ‘Great!’ or simply continues cheering. Good, good, because we’ve got a great show coming this evening! All of you are about to discover the actual facts about the latest Hollywood couple, Benetrice! Crowd goes wild cheering and clapping. Let us welcome the five Cupids! Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro!

Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro run or walk in smiling as their name is called. They all take a seat.

Host: Hi, how are you? Smiling, real casually.

Don Pedro: Great. Thanks so much for inviting us!

Leonato: I can not wait to get started.

Host: Great. Let me tell you, everyone is so excited to have you here. Speaking towards the audience. Am I right? Audience says ‘Yes!’.

Claudio: Laughing and smiling. We’re really excited to be here too.

Host: Audience quiets down. So you all know about the newest couple, Benedick and Beatrice or ‘Benetrice’ as they’re called these days. There have been rumors that you five have played an important role in getting the two of them together.

Don Pedro: Yea, we all thought they would be good for one another.

Host: Well, so far it seems you did well in matching them up. It’s quite a remarkably feat, I must say, getting Benedick and Beatrice together.

Hero: Yes it was. It was practically impossible to find them not bickering at each other. They’re both very witty.

Host, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro are all chuckling.

Host: Do you all agree with this? Nodding towards Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro.

Ursula: Yes, it’s true. Even now they still bicker at each other.

Host: So you five hooked Benedick and Beatrice up? How did you get them together?

Don Pedro: Laughing. Now that’s a funny story. We totally set Benedick up. He had been in the garden, when we walked by. He seemed to have spotted us and hid himself, but not before we saw where he was hiding.

Claudio: So then we started speaking VERY loudly of how Beatrice loved Benedick so much, but she could never tell him, for if she did, she would die.

Leonato: Chuckling. We sure baited the hook well, and the fish most definitely did bite.

Everyone is laughing or chuckling. The atmosphere is excited, happy and comfortable.

Host: Lucky for you (indicating the audience), we caught this fishing trip on camera.

Video clip is shown on screen.

* * *

Don Pedro, Claudio, and Leonato are walking in the garden. You can see Benedick hiding behind a tree.

Don Pedro: Come Leonato. Were you the one who told me that BEATRICE was in love with SINGOR BENEDICK? Speaking towards the tree behind which Benedick is hiding.

Claudio: I did not know she would love anyone.

Leonato: Neither did I. Though she pretends to hate him, she loves more than you would think possible.

Don Pedro: It would be good if Benedick new this.

Claudio: What good would that bring? He would only make more fun of her.

Don Pedro: She is a sweet lady. She is virtuous and wise.

Leonato: Except that she loves Benedick.

Claudio: Hero says Beatrice will die if he loves her, if he knows she loves him, or if he asks her out.

Benedick: To himself. What?! That’s not possible!

Leonato: Well should we go tell Benedick of her love?

Claudio: We can never tell him.

Don Pedro: To Claudio and Leonato. If he doesn’t love her now, I don’t know how to get them together. Now we have to tell Hero to do the same to Beatrice.

* * *

Everyone is applauding and laughing.

Host: So that’s how it happened. Now, Hero and Ursula, you had the job of tricking Beatrice. How did that go?

Hero: It was fun. I just got Margaret to run off and tell Beatrice we were talking about her in the garden. Beatrice came right along, of course.

Ursula: It was really quite entertaining.

Host: Well, let’s show our audience the famous video clip of the witty Beatrice falling into an obvious trap.

* * *

Hero and Ursula are walking in the orchard, their arms linked. You can see Beatrice hiding behind a tree or clump of flowers.

Hero: She is too hateful. Signor Benedick calls her ‘Lady Disdain’, even though he LOVES her.

Ursula: But are you sure that Benedick loves Lady Beatrice so completely?

Hero: That’s what my Claudio and Don Pedro said.

Ursula: Will you tell Beatrice of Benedick’s love?

Hero: No. She would make fun of him.

Ursula: The Lady Disdain…she turns every man inside out. Never sees their good sides.

Beatrice: To herself. Indignant. That’s not true.

Hero: Yea, and Signor Benedick is really on of the best men.

Ursula: Benedick must fight against the passion he has for Beatrice. She may never find out that he LOVES her so entirely.

* * *

Everyone is laughing and applauding.

Host: Well now, that was quite amusing. Benedick and Beatrice don’t seem so witty now. Let’s welcome in the two love birds, shall we? Audience applaud .Beatrice and Benedick walk in smiling.

Host: Thanks for joining us this evening. So tell us, how did you two come together

Benedick: I’ve always loved Beatrice.

Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro are trying to hold back laughter.

Beatrice: It’s true. I love him. He would do anything for me. He almost killed Claudio on my wish.

Benedick and Claudio both nod, remembering when Benedick had threatened to kill Claudio.

Host: Really? So you both just always loved each other? I’ve been told that you bicker a lot. Is this true?

Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro are keeping suspiciously quiet. They are trying their hardest not to burst out laughing.

Beatrice: Well yes, we do. Adds hurriedly. But every couple goes through some arguments.

Benedick: It’s because we’re both so witty and wise.

Host: Hmm… yes. Well, we have something to show you. Shows parts of the two clips.

* * *

Don Pedro, Claudio, and Leonato are walking in the garden. You can see Benedick hiding behind a tree.

Don Pedro: Come Leonato. Were you the one who told me that BEATRICE was in love with SINGOR BENEDICK?

Claudio: I did not know she would love anyone.

Leonato: Neither did I. Though she pretends to hate him, she loves more than you would think possible.

* * *

Hero and Ursula are walking in the orchard, their arms linked. You can see Beatrice hiding behind a tree or clump of flowers.

Ursula: But are you sure that Benedick LOVES Lady Beatrice so completely?

Hero: That’s what, Claudio and Don Pedro said.

* * *

Everyone is laughing their heads off except Benedick and Beatrice. They are sitting grinning, but in a shocked, embarrassed way.

Benedick: Pause. Oh my god, I never new about this…
Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro are still giggling.

Don Pedro: Laughing. Teasing in a friendly way. Yea, the ‘witty’ couple fell for our trick.

Host: So tell me, how are you feeling?

Benedick: Grinning sheepishly. Em… Embarrassed, mostly. I mean, it doesn’t change anything between us. Indicating Beatrice.

Beatrice: No. It only changes my feelings towards those five. Chuckling, nods towards Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro.

Leonato: To the audience. They’ll forgive us by tomorrow.

Host: Not so sure you can believe your friends any more? Chuckling.

Beatrice: Laughing. For some reason, no I don’t think I can completely believe them. Casually. But I do believe that Benedick asked me to marry him.

A surprised silence and then the crowd start whistling, cheering and applauding. Even Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato and Don Pedro are surprised but they clap too.

Host: Stands up and comes to center stage. Let’s end this on a happy note. Thanks for coming! He returns to Hero, Ursula, Claudio, Leonato, Don Pedro, Beatrice and Benedick as camera zooms out.

April 19th...

So far the Modern Shakespeare unit has been a bit difficult to complete. Since we have no received any scripts back, I'm still confused about what I'm supposed to be doing. As a class we have split the type of scripts into groups. We have a gossip group, a news group, an group that's responsible for the breaks and a talk show group. I am in the talk show group with Uudee, Tsolmon and Yea Jun. In our group, we haven't done much. For one of the scripts a table will be needed. It'll be similar to a late night show. That's as far as we've got. I don't want to combine scripts.
I think better quality videos will be produced if the class is split into 3 groups. Each group then has a script that they have to turn into a video. This brings us back to choosing which scripts should be created. Some people may not want their scripts to be used. That's fine. The class should read the scripts and with Mrs. Wilson's and Mr. Thompson's feedback we can decide which scripts we want to turn into videos.

Investigation

Unit question: How can we create a video presentation of a Shakespeare play that will appeal to the modern day viewers?

Learner Profile: Communicators

AOI: Approaches to Learning…because the unit helps students to look at new ways of interpreting old material in order to increase our understanding of it (old material).

OUR TASK: In this unit we will be finding the answer to the unit question above by reading the play Much Ado About Nothing in English class (English A1 students) and/or reading interpretational material about the play then writing scripts and filming and modern news show featuring the major events in the story. ~ Mrs. Wilson

The project we are starting is called “Modern Shakespeare”. This was the title the majority of the class wanted. Some of us, including me, wanted The Shiny Shakespeare Show, but it wasn’t too popular among the guys. In this unit we will be taking the book, Much Ado About Nothing, written by William Shakespeare, and turning it into a modern language talk show. In our English A class, we will be writing scripts, in modern English, for the show E! about the scandals that happened in Much Ado About Nothing. In IT we will then be creating talk shows in our IT class. Shakespeare is actually funny, except that you can’t really understand it. By making a movie, in modern English, it will be easy to understand and funny.

The final project will be a talk show, news show, etc. about a scene from Much Ado About Nothing in modern English. This will be written, acted out, filmed and edited. We will need scripts, video camera, props, costumes, backgrounds, etc. The final project should be a complete talk show based on Much Ado About Nothing in modern English. I think by making the scripts funny, it will appeal to people. Most people like comedy. Shakespeare is comedy, so by acting it out so that people can understand it, it’ll be fun.

This unit will be a good way to learn about filming. I don’t know anything about making movies and editing, so I hope I’ll learn something. By writing the scripts and acting out scenes from Shakespeare in a modern way, it will help the whole class to understand the language of Shakespeare. This is ATL. By re-acting the scandals in modern English, I think we’ll be able to understand Shakespeare better.
The class chose Communicators as our Learner Profile, because a communicator is a student who can express their ideas in different ways and in different languages. By re-writing scripts in modern English and acting them out, we will be showing how we understand Shakespeare and we’ll be expressing our knowledge in a creative, fun way.

Shakespeare is a great writer of his time. Today we read Shakespeare, but it’s much harder to understand. It definitely broadens you vocabulary. Once you understand it, it’s not that bad. It’s a bit of history combined with entertaining stories. I don’t really enjoy Shakespeare. I’ve only read two books. At first I don’t understand it, but once you get used to the language it get’s easier. By the end of the book, it really wasn’t that bad.

Design Specifications
1.The stories must be filmed and all students must play a significant part in the making of the video (script-writing, costumes, backgrounds, filming, editing, etc.)
2.The video must be based on the play, using names and events in the play exactly as they happen.
3.The scripts must be written in modern day English in the format of a news show (interviews, documentaries, news reports, talk shows, etc.)

Interview
What kind of resources do think are necessary for making a good movie?
Camera, microphone, computer, light effects, good setting, good plot, good costumes, actors, good make-up,

What is the most important factor to making a good movie?

Same scene from different angles , the way you show what they’re doing, directing

What kind of costumes would be appropriate for a modern day, Shakespeare based talk show?

Kinda Shakespeare style, but kinda modern, mini

Is good lighting and sound important for a good movie?
Of course it is.

What makes a good movie a good movie?
Suspense, irony, music background, good actors, good plot and setting, a hippo in it.
Humor
I want to create a talk show, including two other video clips. I will need a camera, settings, props, costumes, actors, crew?, backgrounds, mics?, and probably a computer for editing the shots. I think it'll be the easiest and best way to have my classmates tell me what they want to do. It's not point putting someone on stage when they have absolutely no interest in acting, unless you see that they have huge potential and fit the role very well.

Design Specifications
-Setting, props, and costumes need to look good.
-You need to be able to hear the actors speaking. It must be clear.
-Movie needs to be at least five minutes long.
-It should be funny. If it's not, I do not think it will appeal to people and will -not answer the unit question.
-Everyone participating should have fun!

Once the movie has been made, I think it would be fun to show it to different classes and have them fill out a survey of what they thought. That way we can see if the final product was any good and they will hopefully be entertained. The test can be having the 6th, 7th and 8th graders watch the movie and fill out a survey. Maybe this could be done during our IT class and we can invite them to watch or we can do it after school or during break and lunch. The test should also test the design specifications that Mrs. Wilson gave us.

Evaluation

My presentation was based on the Frisbee, invented by Fred Morrison. I researched about the Frisbee and based on that information, I created a PowerPoint. At first I wanted to make a poster, but as I was making it, I realized I had a lot of information which I wanted to include, but it wouldn’t fit on the poster. That’s when I decided to make a PowerPoint. It would be a good way to present my information.

After I had finished my final product, a PowerPoint, I had to test it. I did this by asking a couple of people what they had thought of my presentation. I think my final product was successful, except I did not really answer the unit question in a straight forward way. My PowerPoint was neat, had good information and was easy to read, but it did not answer the unit question. I also looked at my grade for the final product as part of my test. I asked Mrs. Wilson why I received the grade I did, and it was because I didn’t answer the unit question well enough. The fact that the unit question was not answered well makes my product not as successful as it could have been.

Cr.A – Investigation

Investigation for this project was easier than usual. Mrs. Wilson handed out sheets with a lot of significant information on the topics people chose. Those sheets were a good start and helped a lot in the Investigation. I created some of my own questions that I had to answer. Most were about the inventor and invention, but some were things to do with advertisement and things I thought might be interesting. Citing all my sources is not hard work, but it takes a while. I spent quite a bit of time on MLA citations. I think I did a lot of good research, and my citations were fine. The Frisbee isn’t exactly complex so there wasn’t so much I could research. I think I did my Investigation well.

Cr.C – Plan

Plan is usually easy, but this time I had a bit of trouble. I was a bit confused with the due dates and when I made the plan, it was not detailed enough. I asked a few people if my plan was ok, and I was told to put more detail in. I did. Unfortunately, half way through my plan for the poster, I wanted to make a PowerPoint so I had a lot of changes to make. I posted my first Plan on my blog. After I made the changes I also posted the changed plan on my blog. I didn’t really follow my plan this time. At first I was behind with the poster and then I completely changed my final product.

Cr.D – Create

For this project, the final product could be a poster, PowerPoint, essay, or anything that answered the unit question. At first I wanted to make a poster. I could get all colorful and creative while answering the unit question. But after I had started writing on my poster, I realized I had a lot of information and it would not fit on my poster and still be neat. That’s when I decided to switch to a PowerPoint. I could clearly present all my information. Since I had spent a day on the poster, I had to choose something that I could do quickly. The PowerPoint was super easy and fast to make, and it included everything I thought it needed to. I had some pictures. I explained who the inventor was and how he invented the Frisbee. I also included some other facts and information I had found during my research. Overall, I was happy with my PowerPoint.

Improvements

I think I could have done a lot better, overall on this assignment. I think my Investigation was good, but my Plan and final product could/should have been better. I could definitely have improved my Plan by adding more detail. I should have understood exactly when we had class, when it was due, and when I had time to create my final product. I should have explained each step careful, stating exactly what I was going to do to finish my final product. It would have been easier if I hadn’t decided to change my final project.

My final product could have been good except I did not answer the unit question well enough. Reflecting on how some of my classmates did it, I should have had a slide which stated the unit question and then answered it. That’s mainly what I would have done to improve my grade. I think my presentation and most of the slide show wasn’t too bad. I’m annoyed at myself that I didn’t answer the unit question clearly or well enough…

The Frisbee - Cr.A Investigation

Cr.A Investigation
In IT class, each student has been given an invention to research. Our unit question is “How do inventors come up with ideas and create their inventions?” Each student will research they invention and answer the unit question. The final product, by the student, should be an essay, PowerPoint, ect. explaining the invention they were given and answering the unit question.
I chose to research the Frisbee. I chose it because I have always liked playing with a Frisbee. I had never thought about who invented it or why it was invented. I knew it would be easier to research a topic that I liked and could relate to. That’s why I chose the Frisbee.
By researching our topic, we can hopefully answer the unit question. There are millions of inventions in the world, but you do not know who they were invented by or why they were invented. By doing this project we can give credit to inventors. We may use their inventions every day, yet we do not ever think about the person who invented it. Doing this project and researching inventions why can learn about inventions and how and why they were invented. This answers the unit question. I think it’s important that we give credit to the inventors and not just use they’re inventions without a second thought.
To learn more about the Frisbee I had to research it. I used the paper, Mrs. Wilson had given use and the internet. The sources;

Detailed Test/ Design Specifications – For my final product I will create a poster about the Frisbee. I will also bring in a Frisbee. =) My design specifications for the poster will be;

Does it answer the unit question? (How do inventors come up with ideas and create their inventions?)

Does it thoroughly describe Fred Morrison and the Frisbee’s history up till now?

Does it present my research well?

Is it neat, organized and easy to read?

Is it colorful and nice to look at?

Will it give me a grade of 5-6?

My final product should follow these questions. I will ask myself and some classmates wether they think my poster answers the questions in a positive way.

Other facts...

Fred Morrison died at the age of 90. (23/01/1920 ~ 09/02/2010)
His wife and three kids are still alive.
200 million Frisbees have been sold world wide.
Morrison was a pilot in World War II.

Who was the Frisbee aimed at? Which age/gender/etc.?

• Morrison first sold his Pluto Platter at fairs. Wham-O bought it and renamed it to Frisbee. Wham-O is a toy company, so the Frisbee is aimed at children. Though you can be any age or gender to play with a Frisbee.

Are there different types of Frisbees?

• Yes, there are different types of Frisbees. There is a freestyle Frisbee. There is also a Frisbee used to play Ultimate Frisbee. Frisbees come in different sizes too. They all work the same way, though based on the material/size a Frisbee will fly differently.

Wham-O has produced different types. -> http://www.wham-o.com/default.cfm?page=Search&SearchFlag=true&SearchString=Frisbee

Does Wham-O still exist today?

• Wham-O still exists as a toy company. It was founded in 1948 and still exists today. It still owns the Frisbee ®.

What are some Frisbee games?

• Ultimate Frisbee – It is an official sport using a Frisbee. It mixes soccer, basketball, American football, and net ball. It is a non-contact and team sport.

Frisbee Golf – The rules and idea of the game is like golf, except you use a Frisbee.

There are other games which can be played with a Frisbee, such as Frisbee Hot-Potato or Frisbee Rugby.

Where did the Pluto Platter originate?

• Fred Morrison invented the Pluto Platter in 1948, in Utah, his home. It was based off of pie tins you could toss between people. In 1957 Morrison sold the Pluto Platter to the Wham-O toy company, after he had not had much success with it.

Does a product’s name really have such a great affect on its popularity?

•Yes. People are not going to buy a prodcut with an unappealing name. A product will not become popular, if it's name does not attract attention in a positive way.

How was the Pluto Platter made? How does it work?

• The Pluto Platter is actually based on the design of the Frisbie Baking Company’s pie tins. A pie tin is a shallow, circular, tin dish. “The platter's novel aerodynamic shape allowed it to hover briefly or travel surprisingly long distances, kept aloft by its rotation.” – BBC News It’s made out of plastic.

Who is Fred Morrison? Did he do anything else?

• Walter Frederick Morrison was a carpenter and building inspector. He was in WWII and had returned from Stalag 13, a prison in Germany. When he returned to the USA (California) people were really into the ideas of UFOs and flying saucers. This lead to his idea/creation of the Pluto Platter. His father was also an inventor, so he was not the first in his family.

Cr.E Evaluation

Evaluation
AOI – Human Ingenuity Learner Profile – Risk Taker
Throughout this assignment, human ingenuity and being a risk taker was evident. Human ingenuity was in the form of our ideas. Everyone had different ideas and we had to figure out if they were possible and how they could maybe work. Being a risk taker can be hard or easy. In this assignment, you had to take the risk of having a new idea, finding out how to make it work, and then telling people about it. It is a risk presenting the ideas. You can’t know what people think until you’ve taken the risk of showing them. They may think it’s a bad idea or a good one.
Cr.A – Investigation
My group and I worked quite well. We researched heaters and the infra-red camera. We had to make sure that our idea, a self-regulating heater, had not been invented yet. When all three of us had researched, we came to the conclusion that our exact idea had not been invented. We each researched different aspects of heaters and cameras, so when we came together we added everything we knew to create our final design. Then we created design specifications. While designing and creating our final product, we had to keep these in mind.
Design Specifications
• It needs to be cost-efficient.
• It needs to be energy-efficient.
• It needs to be safe (child-safety).
• It needs to be portable.
• It needs to come in a variety of colors and designs.

Cr.B – Design
I worked in a group of three, so there were plenty of different designs to choose or combine. We liked a lot of the designs, but for the original we decided to create a classic, rectangular heater. Based on our design specifications we added other things like child safety, a manual control and wheels. Because we liked our other designs, which were directed more towards kids, we added a “Da Fonk” edition. This included our volcano self-regulating heater. It was mostly to entertain us. =P We worked quickly and got the designs together to create a final.
Cr.C – Plan
Because we had finished the Investigation and Design quickly we had plenty of time to create our final product. In this case, it was to be a poster, since we couldn’t actual create a heater. We only planned four IT classes to create the poster. It turned out to be enough time. We didn’t have to rush it and we didn’t have to work on it outside of class. Our plan worked well and the whole group followed it well. Because we followed it we had extra time.
Cr.D – Create
We create our final product, a poster, based on our plan. On our poster we included the original final design and our “Da Fonk” edition. Our poster was colorful and neat…until someone spilled water on it. When we asked people’s opinions on our poster they said it was good, though it could have been more colorful and a little neater. I think it was good. You could read the features and the pictures were easy to understand. Creating was easy and fast. We all took part in drawing, writing and sketching out our poster. In the end, our poster looked pretty good. =)
Overall our final product was successful. We tested our product by asking the opinions of other students. Other students thought our idea was good and our final product/poster was pretty good. Our poster could have been better organized and colorful, but it was still easy to read and it presented our idea well. Our test for our product/final design was also the presentation of it. We simply stated our idea, what it did and how it works. Then we explained the rest of the poster. Some people had some comments and questions and I think we were able to respond and answer them well.
Improvements can always be made. For the work the group did, I think we did good. We filled out the booklet and finished ahead of the due date. For our final product we could have been more creative. It would have been really cool, if there was technology that could create a self-regulating heater. Or that we knew about the technology and understood it. The research could have been a bit better. We had plenty of good designs too. Our plan was clear and easy to follow. We did follow it. Our poster could have been a bit clearer and more colorful. It would have been nice, if someone hadn’t spilled water on it. =/ Besides the things I mentioned before, the whole thing went quite well.
I think I did okay on this project. I worked well, we’re all friends and capable of doing our work together. It was fun, and we still created a decent final product. I worked well. Not more or less than the other in my group. I think I could have done a bit better on my research and my designs were not extravagant. Though overall, I think I did well.
Self-grade: 4-5
